ESBS-Austria originates from the successful Austrian technology platforms ARTEMIS-Austria (embedded software and software architectures) and ENIAC-Austria (micro- and nanoelectronics). Recognizing the increasing integration of hardware, software, and smart systems, Austrian stakeholders merged both organizations in 2013 to form ECSEL-Austria, creating a unified platform covering the entire electronic components and systems value chain. The association was further expanded in 2014 to include systems architecture, framework conditions, visibility, and ecosystem development activities.

The merger aligned Austria with the European ECSEL Joint Undertaking (ECSEL JU) and strengthened collaboration between industry, academia, public institutions, and funding organizations. Supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI), the association has successfully fostered innovation, technology transfer, skilled employment, and the development of competitive European value chains.

Austrian members have played an active role in European research and innovation programs in ARTEMIS, ENIAC and ECSEL Joint Undertakings, contributing to international networks and pioneering projects in areas such as embedded systems, semiconductor manufacturing, and smart systems integration. Notably, Austrian organizations coordinated some of Europe's first semiconductor pilot-line initiatives and established strong partnerships within leading European innovation networks. Ultimately new production facilities and new products and services became reality.
